As the number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. and abroad climbs every day, everyone is being encouraged to practice social distancing and take other preventative measures. And while no vaccine for the coronavirus is currently available, there are things you can do to help keep yourself and others safe during the pandemic. Here are five ways to help fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Wash Your Hands Frequently

The World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control recommend thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Washing on a regular basis, or any time after being outside can help to kill germs.

Keep a Distance

Keeping 3 to 6 feet away from someone who is coughing or sneezing can help to protect yourself against the coronavirus. This distancing can help to prevent you from coming into contact with the virus if those near you are infected. If possible, limit social visits and travel to avoid being near others.

Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

Your hands touch many surfaces that can pick up viruses. Viruses can live on surfaces for days and can then transfer to you via your eyes, nose, or mouth. Touching the face can be an involuntary habit, so be mindful.

Keep Your Germs to Yourself

This rule applies now more than ever. Some people who contract the coronavirus show mild symptoms, or none at all. It can take up to two weeks for symptoms to show after someone is infected, making good respiratory hygiene very important. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. This is better than using your hand so that you can prevent spread when touching surfaces.

Watch for Symptoms

Symptoms of coronavirus can be mild and can be easily mistaken for a cold. If you feel at all unwell, the World Health Organization recommends that you stay home. If you have fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, they recommend that you seek medical attention and call in advance.

Many of these measures are easy to take and some are habits you might already have. Taking precautions can help fight the spread of the coronavirus, as well as other diseases like the seasonal flu.
